Ever wanted to see Lick Observatory, look through a telescope, and work with professional astronomers?

This 5-day / 4-night residential program offered through the ASTRAL Consortium at Lick Observatory provides Bay Area community college students with opportunities to learn about and engage with the work of professional astronomers and observatory personnel. The workshop emphasizes inclusion and can be a jumping-off point for future internships in astronomy, physics, and other science and engineering fields.
The workshop is offered at no cost to participating students and is funded through a generous grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

This free workshop includes:

  • Observing experiences with the telescopes at Lick Observatory and with eVscopes
  • Work with professional astronomers and real data to learn how to contribute to new discoveries
  • Community building with other STEM-interested community college students
  • Free housing and meals at Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton, near San Jose, CA
  • Practice with inclusive and effective teamwork skills
  • Information for students who are interested in transferring to 4-year colleges and/or astronomy-related careers
  • Assistance with transportation to Lick Observatory
  • Additional travel support or help with other expenses may be available
